Beetles History

June 1 is a special day in Beetles history. The Alexandria Beetles inaugural season began on June 1, 2001 . Former Major League Baseball star Goose Gossage was on hand at historic Knute Nelson Memorial Park to throw out the first pitch.

Many people have come and gone through the gates of Knute Nelson since that day. Some of these being state representatives in Congress, others being former Major League stars, but mostly people who just have a love for baseball. The oldest living hall-of-fame inductee Bob Feller has graced the field with his presence, along with former Minnesota Twins Frank Viola, Gary Serum and Dan Gladden.

Great things continue to happen for the Beetles. Since that first season in 2001 attendance continues to rise and the level of talent on the field sets new precedent year after year. The average attendance at Knute Nelson Memorial Park has risen steadily from 700 in 2001 to 1,250 fans per game in 2008.

This year, our ninth season gets under way on May 28, but June 1 will always be a special day in Beetles history.
